Happy Hours Market allows you to buy unsold items from Brussels stores at half the original price.
Every year in Europe, some 90 million tonnes of edible food are wasted. Belgium is one of the biggest wasteful countries with, on average, 345 kilos of food thrown away per year and per person.
The principle is simple. As soon as the stores close, the Happy Hours Market truck picks up unsold and quickly perishable products from participating stores. At 8 p.m., all merchandise is displayed on the application and on site. Customers have until 10 p.m. to choose what they like and put it in their virtual shopping cart. They will then pick up their goods the same evening at an appointment point with the refrigerated truck.
Unsold items that Happy Hours Market is unable to sell are then redistributed to associations in need.
Their vision: Universal access to affordable and healthy food is an essential challenge in today’s society. In addition, overproduction of food is constantly depleting the planet’s resources, while one third of global production is thrown away.
Their mission? It is to reduce food waste by providing access to healthy and varied food at low prices.
Societal impact
Happy Hours Market’s activity contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals’ objectives of 10 “Reduced Inequality” and 12 “Responsible Consumption and Production”.
